Ingredients

Potatoes and Meat

  • 6 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter or cooking oil
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt (to taste)

Instructions

Cooking Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Peel and slice the potatoes thinly and as close to the same thickness as possible.
  • In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onion, garlic, and thyme and sauté until the onion is translucent.
  • Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned. Break it into small crumbles and season with salt, pepper, bouillon powder, oregano, and paprika.
  • Drain excess fat from the skillet, then sprinkle the flour over the beef mixture. Stir well and cook for another minute.
  • Gradually add the beef broth and milk to the skillet, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens.
  • Grease a 9"x13" baking dish with butter. Arrange half of the sliced potatoes along the bottom, followed by half of the ground beef mixture. Repeat with remaining potatoes and beef.
  • Cover with foil and bake for about 45 minutes or until the potatoes are tender.
  • Uncover the dish, sprinkle the cheddar cheese evenly on top, and bake for another 10-15 minutes until the cheese melts.
  • Remove from oven, let it cool for a few minutes, garnish with fresh parsley and serve.

Notes

Broil for a crispy top and let it rest for 10-15 minutes after cooking to thicken the sauce and meld the flavors.
